Michelle Sale is a New York state certified English and social studies teacher with a journalism background. She recently completed an 11th-grade leave-replacement position in Washingtonville High School. Being back in an English classroom enabled Ms. Sale to bring personalized attention into a classroom setting. The school provided Ms. Sale with invaluable experience about the technology teachers and students are using in today's classroom.
In 2003, Washingtonville Middle School hired Ms. Sale to design and implement a writing elective aimed at improving the skills of eighth-grade students. Her class was innovative, intense, and highly successful. Students left the course with a desire to write better, as well as a stronger grasp of grammar rules.
Ms. Sale left Washingtonville to start a family. She began a private tutoring business to stay current with students and satisfy her need to continue to learn and grow.
Besides teaching in Washingtonville, Ms. Sale taught in Manhattan and worked in magazine publishing for several years.
Currently, Ms. Sale tutors students in Southern Orange County and Rockland County in English, social studies, organization skills, and study skills. She has also developed essay writing workshops, SAT essay workshops, and college application essay workshops. In addition, she has worked as an SAT instructor for a local test prep company and acts as a college advisor to students applying to college.
Ms. Sale also works as a freelance writer. In this capacity, she spent six years writing lesson plans for The New York Times’ Learning Network, an educational Web site (www.nytimes.com/learning). She has also composed lesson plans and written teaching materials for companies such as Houghton Mifflin, Pearson, and the International Center for Leadership in Education (

Her passion for history, along with her English teaching background, helped Ms. Sale promote writing in all subject classes.
